An Engineering Sample

What’s it like to work with Misco? Here’s an example: A customer needed to replace a woofer — a European driver that was getting very expensive and hard to obtain. To fit their current and legacy models the customer planned to use their new Misco woofer in new systems, but they also needed the woofer to fit their models. In order to match the customer’s dimensional requirements we performed extensive 3D modeling to create the basket and motor assembly.

80% of the speaker parts came from in-house inventory, including the long-travel flat spider. To optimize performance, we custom designed the voice coil for low distortion. All of this reduced overall sourcing and sampling time. The high-strength abaca cone gave the speaker smooth and predictable response, and the final woofer met all of the project’s unique challenges, including the customer’s physical dimension requirements and their small signal parameters and frequency response specifications.

With a combination of custom-designed and existing parts, Misco designed and manufactured this woofer to replace an expensive and hard-to-find European driver.

Development of this woofer produced many unique challenges. The design goals outlined by the customer included specific SSP and frequency response characteristics, as well as strict physical dimension requirements.

In order to meet the customer’s requirements for motor parameters Misco turned to its design experience and vast selection of stock parts. Using 80% off the shelf parts, only having to custom design a voice coil, Misco was able to efficiently design a low distortion motor system. This system utilized copper shorting cap on the pole to reduce eddy-currents in the yoke, reducing distortion. This also reduced the high frequency inductance, making the speaker easier to integrate with passive crossover components.

The cone and spider provided their own challenges. Misco used their extensive knowledge of cone materials and profiles, in conjunction with a large vendor database to choose the cone specifications and supplier. This specific cone utilized a higher strength abaca cone pulp along with a high-compliance rubber surround, giving the speaker a smooth and predictable response. The long- travel flat spider came off the shelf, thus reducing overall sourcing and sampling time.
